February 2019 Featured Member - La Brea Tar Pits

Discover an active Ice Age excavation site right in the middle of Los Angeles. Hidden in the Tar Pits is the evidence of L.A. life over the last 50,000 years, including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, giant sloths, and more. See science in action, watching every step from excavation to lab examination to exhibit.

This year the museum is also experiencing a takeover of MAMMOTH proportions. In the new exhibition "Mammoths and Mastodons at La Brea Tar Pits," you can discover these magnificent Ice Age beasts in a whole new way. Get up close to La Brea’s real fossils, and to new life-sized replicas that show what these animals looked like in life. Take part in interactive experiences that show you what excavating and analyzing these fascinating creatures is really like.
